[PDF version of session overview]

brought to you by AT:LAST, Inc.,
Your Maryland A.T. Co-op
As parents of special needs children, we have to interface with so many professionals (educational and medical) often having to understand information that is not in an area of our own expertise. All too often we are left feeling that we have to almost bully through in order to get our children the services they need. While some of us may like a challenge, these more contentious negotiations with the outside world often leave us feeling depleted of energy and spirit.
This workshop centers on techniques of advocating for your child that promotes fostering cooperation and developing a shared vision of what is in the best interest of your child with those giving your child service. Strategies addressed will include: defining the problem, effective preparation for advocacy, having a successful meeting, strategies for having difficult conversations and negotiating conflict, effective management of service providers, getting to problem resolution and effective monitoring of the solution.
Many other workshops have centered on child rights and laws, what makes this advocacy workshop unique is that it centers on the psychological resources and strategies which make parent advocates successful for their children. |
